AMPAIGNERS hit out last night at online retailers for openly selling racist toys and costumes.
Show Racism the Red Card demanded web giants withdraw offensive items including golly dolls and “minstrel” outfits.
Amazon.co.uk has been offering a £34.99 Minstrel Fancy Dress Costume, modelled by a man wearing an afro-style wig and brown make-up.
It was described on the website as “colourful” with “a fun retro look”.
Minstrel shows, where white actors wore make-up to perform sketches mocking black people, were once common but are now seen as highly offensive.
Amazon’s US page also lists a £38 fancy dress golly outfit which can be delivered to the UK.
Auction site eBay says it does not allow items that “glorify racial intolerance”.
But its UK page has 722 listings with the word “golliwog”, including dolls from £5 to £368.
Crafts site Etsy has 358 listings for “golly”.
Show Racism the Red Card said: “Golly dolls are symbolic of a time when very often racism would be left unchallenged or even promoted in society.
“The offence caused by the dolls should outweigh the right to sell them.”
Amazon last night removed the minstrel costume from its site.
Etsy said that it allowed vintage gollies to be listed, but not new ones. It promised an inquiry.
Ebay said it was reviewing the listings.
